Neurontin (generic name: Gabapentin) is drug which is prescribed for the treatment of epileptic seizures. Gabapentin is an anti-epileptic medication, also called an anticonvulsant. It affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain. Neurontin is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat seizures caused by epilepsy in adults and children who are at least 12 years old. Neurontin is also used with other medications to treat partial seizures in children who are 3 to 12 years old. Neurontin is also used in adults to treat nerve pain caused by the herpes virus or shingles (herpes zoster). Neurontin works by affecting the chemicals in the brain that control the nervous system. In people with epilepsy the chemicals in the brain become imbalanced, and Neurontin helps to fix this imbalance.

Neurontin Side Effects:
As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Neurontin including dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, fatigue, blurred vision, headache, breast swelling and loss of balance. More serious side effects may include increased seizures, fever, chills, body aches, swelling in the ankles or feet, confusion, rapid back and forth movements of the eyes and easy bruising. Common side effects in children include changes in behaviour, memory problems, trouble concentrating and acting restless. If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Neurontin Directions:
You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Neurontin to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Neurontin comes in capsule form. Swallow the capsules with water. Do not break, crush or chew capsules as this may result in too much of the drug being released at once, which could have undesirable effects. Neurontin should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Neurontin Precautions:
If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Neurontin, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including liver or kidney disease, heart disease or is you work night shifts. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Neurontin, including hydrocodone, morphine and naproxen. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Neurontin may cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
